Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Continued…

Today’s (Apr 8, 2025) class time was mostly spent on analyzing the armed conflict location and event data. We talked about the nearest Neighbors Classification of fatalities  by looking at the data (latitude & longitude, year, month, and day).

  • Finding 2020-2022 (find nearest neighbors of a random location)
  • And predicting for 2023/2024 for possibility of violent demonstrations for this place
  • How well can we predict which demonstrations will be violent or peaceful?

One of our classmates ‘Mahnoor’ presented the work she had done locating the nearest neighbors for a certain location and how changing the number of nearest neighbor for predictions can lead to different results.

Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Continued…

Today’s (Apr 1, 2025) class time was mostly spent on analyzing the armed conflict location and event data. We spent time looking at the raw data, and then me & my group member (Chandrakanth) were able to analyze this data in python.

We extracted the necessary previous year’s data and were able to see the data visually in table form with only the necessary columns. We also visualized the data with a geo plot. We’ll continue exploring it, to be able to predict the possibility of a violent political demonstration at a given place by looking at the data for previous years for its nearest neighbors.
